The Pera Uni student who attempted to hang himself from an electric fan in the university dormitory yesterday (08) morning, has provided a statement to the police. The student claims that he decided to end his life in this manner after being taken to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) last Friday (07), where he alleges he was subjected to severe beatings by officers.

According to the student’s statement, his mobile phone was confiscated by the CID, and he was informed that his university enrollment would be terminated, effectively ending his higher education. Feeling trapped and without any other options in life, he believed that suicide was his only choice.

The student gave this statement to the police when they visited him at Peradeniya Hospital to obtain an official account of the incident, which was recorded accordingly.

The student in question is identified as C. Vidurajidan, a resident of Batticaloa Main Street, who is currently in his second year of study in the allied health faculty at the University of Peradeniya.

The incident stems from a complaint filed by the university governing authority regarding the harassment of first-year students via WhatsApp, involving the dissemination of explicit videos. The CID initiated an investigation into the matter, identifying four students allegedly involved in the bullying. The student involved in the suicide attempt was among them. However, the university governing authority clarified that the student had evaded appearing before the CID, providing an explanation for his actions.
