Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) CD Wickramaratne has been granted a three-month extension of service by the President, starting from today (09). This marks the second time that the former IGP’s service has been extended.
The decision to extend the former IGP’s service comes as a temporary measure to address the crisis stemming from power struggles within the police force and allegations against the top four senior officers eligible for the IGP position.
In a letter to the President, His Holiness Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith expressed his opposition to the nomination of Senior Deputy Inspector Generals Nilantha Jayawardene and Deshabandu Tennakoon for the role of IGP. He indicated that he would inform the Archbishop of Colombo about these nominations, reflecting the social sentiment towards these senior police officers.
However, the Deputy Defense Minister emphasized that religious affiliations do not factor into the appointment of the Inspector General of Police, dismissing the notion that religious ideologies should be considered in the selection process.
