A second-year student from the Faculty of Allied-Health Sciences at Peradeniya University has been admitted to Peradeniya Hospital for treatment following a suicide attempt today (08) early morning.
According to the police, the student tried to take his own life in a room on the second floor of Senaka Bibile hostel at around 1 a.m. During the attempt, he fell and sustained injuries. Other students in the hostel discovered him lying on the floor and immediately took him to the hospital for medical assistance.
The 25-year-old student, who is from Batticaloa, did not join his fellow students for dinner on the previous evening. Concerned about his absence, his peers brought him food but found the room locked when they tried to deliver it.
Upon entering the room through a nearby window, they discovered the injured student and promptly took him to the hospital.
Internal sources indicate that this student is one of the four individuals identified during an investigation into a group that engaged in online harassment and the display of explicit content to a group of freshmen last year.
The other three students involved in the harassment case have already reported to the Criminal Investigation Department for further questioning. However, it is noteworthy that this particular student has not yet appeared before the authorities for the investigation.
Authorities are currently examining whether there is any connection between this suicide attempt and the previous incident of harassment.
