Australians’ Racist Chant Sparks Outrage Among South Asian Cricket Fans, For many South Asians, cricket is more than just a sport—it’s a way of life. Growing up watching matches in living rooms or learning the game in backyards, cricket becomes a cherished tradition. This connection extends to those living in Australia, where many proud South Asian fans have shown up in droves to cheer for their teams during the recent India vs. Australia Test series in major cities across the country.
However, the passion in the stands has not been without controversy. A recent video circulating on social media shows Australian fans chanting “Where’s your visa?” at spectators of Indian heritage during the 4th Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The incident has drawn widespread criticism, with many South Asian fans labeling the chant as racist.
While some have dismissed the remarks as harmless “banter,” others have strongly condemned them, sparking heated discussions online. In response to the uproar, Cricket Australia has issued a statement urging fans to be respectful and courteous during matches.
“Cricket Australia encourages all those attending our matches to show respect and courtesy to fellow attendees to ensure everyone has a great experience,” said a Cricket Australia spokesperson in an exclusive statement to Draw Your Box. “We encourage anyone who experiences inappropriate behaviour to alert security using the antisocial behaviour hotline.”
The MCG’s website outlines measures for addressing such incidents, advising attendees to report anti-social behavior anonymously via text message at +61 409 117 621.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about racism in sports and the need for greater accountability to ensure a welcoming environment for all fans.
