Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the National People’s Power (NPP), has responded to President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s accusations against him. stated that MP Sumanthiran, who is from the North, has correctly addressed these claims on his behalf. He also mentioned that he was not allowed to respond himself.
Dissanayake criticized Wickremesinghe for escalating racial tensions in the North and called for an apology to the Tamil people. Speaking at the General Conference of the Inter-Company Employees Union in Colombo, he said:
“Ranil Wickremesinghe recently claimed that I threatened the Tamil people and then apologized to them.
Ranil Wickremesinghe, you are trying to inflame racial tensions with your politics. Thankfully, I wasn’t there to respond—Mr. Sumanthiran has already given the right answer to your statement.
Efforts to go to the North and stir up racism reflect poorly on the people of the North. Mr. Sumanthiran has rightly refused to engage in this.
Now, Ranil, you should apologize. The politics of spreading racism and dividing the country must end. Your outdated approaches are ineffective and irrelevant.”
