International award-winning veteran dancer Dr. Wajira Chitrasena passed away yesterday afternoon (23).
She was 92 when she passed and was a mother of two children. Being the wife of the internationally acclaimed veteran dancer late Chitrasena she also earned a reputation globally by performing novel dances.
She had extensive knowledge of dance and worked to take the art around the world with her husband. For that reason, she received the Padmasheu Award in India in 2020 for her unique capability for Kandyan dance and her commitment to popularizing it.
Vajira, equally adept at Kandyan traditional dance and Western ballet, is known as the first woman in Sri Lanka to reach its peak.
She has received all the highest awards that a citizen of this country can receive, such as Kala Bhushan, Deshabandu Desabhimani, etc., and the Chitrasena Vajira couple is considered a legend when it comes to dance.
Many audiences remember Karadiya and Naladamayanti’s ballets as she graced them with her dances.
She is an alumnus of Kalutara Girls College and Methodist College
