Former Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan, who recently gained Australian citizenship, has been appointed as the organizer for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya party in Beruwala. However, political sources suggest he may not be eligible to contest in Sri Lanka’s general elections due to his Australian citizenship.
Dilshan, who moved to Australia with his family a few years ago, officially became an Australian citizen on February 24 this year. The announcement was made by Australian Minister Jason Wood during a ceremony for new citizens.

Despite obtaining Australian citizenship, Dilshan recently entered her daughter into a Sri Lankan provincial cricket team raising concerns. His involvement raised concerns as it goes against Sri Lanka Cricket’s selection procedure.
Aware that he might not be able to enter parliament, Dilshan reportedly sought a role as an organizer and cricket coach in Beruwala, aligning himself with Sajith Premadasa’s Samagi Jana Balawegaya party.

The situation has similarities to that of Diana Gamage, a dual citizen who entered parliament through the national list. Her position is now being challenged in court, with the possibility of her membership being revoked.
