Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe underwent heart surgery in Singapore instead of Sri Lanka because he did not want local doctors to face harassment and repeated CID questioning, UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena has revealed.
According to the Sunday Times Abeywardena disclosed this to Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong after visiting Wickremesinghe in Singapore. He explained that all seven doctors who treated the former President at the National Hospital in Colombo were summoned by the CID and harassed.
“To spare Sri Lankan doctors from another such ordeal, Mr. Wickremesinghe chose treatment abroad,” Abeywardena said.
Wickremesinghe is currently recovering in Singapore and is expected to stay away from politics for another two months. He celebrated his 77th birthday on March 24 with a small cake-cutting ceremony while maintaining distance as per doctors’ advice.
