If the Speaker fails to stop and control using tear gas and water cannons by the Police to disperse the protesting students, we may have to take the Speaker hostage inside the House. SJB MP Harin Fernando told Parliament.
The Opposition became agitated inside the House when they heard of the incidents taking place on the road leading to the Parliamentary complex, where Police were mishandling the students. MP Harin Fernando told Parliament if the Speaker denies appropriate steps to control the Police, he would bring the protesting students inside the House.
Taraka Balasuriya was on his feet when the TV footage of the incidents outside Parliament was, telecast over several TV channels. Buddhika Pathirana asked the Chairman of the House to call the Speaker immediately, and JC Alawathuwela also joined Pathirana demanding the Chair of the House to call the Speaker.
Chairman Hesha Vithanage moved to suspend the sittings for ten minutes to avoid the chaos inside the House of Parliament.
