The Irrigation Department has issued a warning of a potential major flood situation, particularly emphasizing the risk posed by the opening of sluice gates at the Deduru Oya Reservoir.
The Irrigation Engineer of Deduru Oya Reservoir stated that 22,800 cubic feet per second will be released, facilitated by the opening of eight sluice gates at 4 feet each. Additionally, it is anticipated that the release may increase to over 23,000 cubic feet in the future.
The release of water from Deduru Oya Reservoir raises concerns about possible road blockages in lower-lying areas, prompting a special request for drivers to exercise caution and drive carefully.
The Disaster Management Center has also cautioned about the heightened risk of severe flooding along Ma Oya, and there may be potential disruptions in traffic along the Colombo 05 Kurunegala road. Residents and commuters are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.
