Vessel Omissions at Colombo Port Hit Exports, Manufacturers Warn

The Free Trade Zone Manufacturers’ Association (FTZMA) has raised alarm over the growing number of vessel omissions at the Port of Colombo, warning that the issue is causing severe setbacks to Sri Lanka’s export industries.

In a letter to Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Anura Karunathilaka, the association said that repeated exclusion of Colombo from key international shipping routes has led to shortages of raw materials, production delays, and missed export deadlines.

According to the FTZMA, major sectors such as apparel, rubber, and electronics—which rely heavily on “just-in-time” supply chains—have been particularly affected. The association cautioned that these disruptions are eroding Sri Lanka’s reputation as a reliable regional shipping hub and deterring global buyers from sourcing through the country.

The FTZMA urged the Minister to take immediate action in coordination with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) and shipping lines to enhance operational efficiency and reduce congestion at the port. It recommended improving inter-terminal transfer systems, strengthening road connectivity between terminals, and expediting the commissioning of new facilities such as the East and West Container Terminals.

The association also called for regular consultations with major shipping lines and clear communication to exporters and importers about steps being taken to address the issue.

“The frequency of vessel omissions highlights the urgent need for intervention to maintain Colombo’s competitiveness and reliability,” the letter stated. “Operational upgrades and a more efficient inter-terminal transfer system are essential to safeguard the export sector.”
