A female member of the National People’s Power (NPP) representing the Peliyagoda Urban Council, Disna Niranjala Kumari, has resigned following the arrest of her husband who was a school principal of Eppawala , Anuradhapura and her son on drug-related charges.
Legal proceedings are currently underway against the two individuals. Kumari, expressing her deep shock over the incident, said it occurred at a time when the NPP Government is prioritising efforts to eradicate the drug menace in the country.
She said her decision to step down was made to support the ongoing legal process and to uphold the NPP’s commitment to promoting a clean and principled political culture.
Accordingly, she has submitted her resignation letter to the Gampaha District Returning Officer, while a copy has also been forwarded to the General Secretary of the National People’s Power.
