The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee this morning decided to cancel the party memberships of 54 candidates including Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa and 61 local government representatives who handed over nominations under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya banner for the forthcoming general elections.
The motion was moved by the General Secretary of the party Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and was unanimously approved at the Working Committee meeting held at the Sirikotha party headquarters this morning led by party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The General Secretary of the party stated in the motion that the decision was taken due to the failure of the relevant candidates and the people’s representatives to participate in the disciplinary inquiry into the party’s breach of party discipline and failure to respond in writing or in response.
In addition, they were recently recognized by the court as members of another party. In addition to passing this resolution at today’s Working Committee meeting, it has also reviewed how to proceed with the forthcoming general election campaign and its progress.
