United Nations took the decision to extend support for the excavation and investigation of the Mulathivu Kokkuthuduwai mass grave in Sri Lanka, yesterday (15).
This move came in response to a request from organizations dedicated to uncovering information about individuals who went missing during the conflict.
The United Nations’ decision follows a report that has identified 32 human burial sites in Sri Lanka thus far. The Kokkuthuduwai Cemetery, where the mass grave is located, is the 33rd such site. The report also noted that previous excavations and examinations of mass graves in the country did not adhere to international standards.
In light of these findings, the United Nations Organization has reached out to the organizations engaged in searching for information about missing persons from the war era. The UN has communicated its commitment to providing support for the proper excavation and thorough investigation of the Mulathivu Kokkuthuduwai Cemetery. This communication has also been forwarded to the Government of Sri Lanka.
