UN Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, condemns the mistreatment of prisoners and the government’s duty to protect the rights of prisoners.
Following reports that the Minister of State for Prisons who visited the Anuradhapura Prison and threatened to several prisoners after taking them out of their cells, the UN Permanent Representative Hanaa Singer Hamdy tweeted today that it was the duty of the government to protect the rights of prisoners under Mandela’s rules on prisoners
“In our work on prison reform and drug rehabilitation, the United Nations Office in Sri Lanka is working to strengthen the rights of all detainees and condemn the mistreatment of victims,” she said in a Twitter message.
