The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk, met with the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, and parliamentary party leaders during his official visit to the country yesterday (24).
The meeting took place at the Parliament premises and was attended by the Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, and Assistant Secretary General, Mr. Hansa Abeyrathne.
Welcoming the High Commissioner, the Hon. Speaker highlighted the peaceful nature of Sri Lanka’s recently concluded elections, describing them as free, fair, and devoid of violence. He noted that the people’s rejection of divisive and racial politics reflects a national desire for unity and reconciliation.
Dr. Wickramaratne further emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to promote intercommunal harmony, fight corruption, and strengthen democracy and transparency. He also underlined the Parliament’s increasing inclusivity, pointing to the highest-ever number of women elected and the appointment of a visually impaired Member of Parliament.

Mr. Volker Türk praised Sri Lanka’s steps toward reconciliation and trust-building, acknowledging the challenges such efforts face in today’s global political climate. He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the advancement of human rights and equality worldwide.
Following the meeting with the Speaker, Mr. Türk held separate talks with political party leaders representing Parliament. Party leaders shared their perspectives on the current socio-political environment, the challenges facing their constituencies, and the importance of legal reforms to support human rights and reconciliation.
They also requested continued technical assistance from the United Nations to support Sri Lanka’s path to sustainable peace and inclusive development.
The meeting was attended by the Leader of the House, Minister Bimal Rathnayaka, the Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, and other party leaders. UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Mr. Marc-André Franche, OHCHR Asia-Pacific Regional Chief Mr. Rory Mungoven, and several UN officials were also present at the discussions.
