/Dr. Upali Sedara, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Reforms states that the University Grants Commission is an outdated institution that should be abolished.

He further says that the President has asked them on several occasions and personally on five occasions whether the University Grants Commission is a necessary institution.

He made these remarks at a special online meeting on education reforms.

He goes on to say
“The UGC concept came from England. There is no such an institution even in England today. Only SAARC countries like India and Bangladesh are holding this . No UGC in Thailand , Indonesia or Korea. This is an outdated institution. “
