Two elephant calves were discovered by local residents on the 15th in the Kurulubedda and Madurangala areas of the Welikanda Division, Polonnaruwa.
The calf found in the Kurulubedda area is approximately a week old and is believed to have been abandoned in the forest. Villagers reported that wildlife officers from Giritale took the young elephant for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, a Welikanda wildlife officer confirmed that the calf found in the Madurangala area, estimated to be about a month old, had died after being trampled by an elephant herd.
An official from the Giritale Wildlife Veterinary Office stated that the deceased calf from Madurangala had been buried, while the rescued calf from Kurulubedda is currently receiving treatment.
Welikanda Wildlife Office site guard, Mr. C.A. Wanasinghe, reported that further investigations are ongoing.
