A young Russian engineer lost his life yesterday (11) evening while swimming in the waters off Unawatuna beach. The deceased, identified as Niiaz Sattarev (25), had arrived in Sri Lanka just days prior, accompanied by four friends.
The group, consisting of five Russian nationals, had been lodging at a villa in Unawatuna. While enjoying a swim in the warm sea, tragedy struck as three of the friends were suddenly engulfed by a powerful wave.

Fortunately, divers swiftly came to their aid, rescuing all three individuals and bringing them safely back to shore. However, Sattarev, who was in critical condition, was immediately transported to Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital by ambulance. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he tragically passed away while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Following his passing, a post-mortem examination was conducted by Coroner Chandrasena Lokuge of Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, with forensic expert Janaki Warushahannadi overseeing the procedure.
Upon thorough examination of the evidence and medical reports, the coroner concluded that Sattarev’s untimely death was a result of drowning.
