Nottingham was gripped by horror and uncertainty as a series of attacks unfolded yesterday (13) early morning, claiming three lives and leaving three others injured.
The first incident occurred on Ilkeston Road, west of the city centre, where two people were found dead shortly after 4:00 BST. In a separate incident, a van intentionally targeted three individuals on Milton Street in the heart of the city. All three victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, another lifeless body was discovered on Magdala Road, approximately a 10-minute drive away. Police have linked all three deaths but have yet to provide specific timelines beyond the 4:00 BST incident.
A 31-year-old man was apprehended on Bentinck Road under suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. At this stage, there is no information indicating whether the incident was related to terrorism.
The victims include two students from the University of Nottingham, as confirmed by the university. It is currently unclear whether they were killed on Ilkeston Road or Magdala Road. Witnesses described the harrowing scene on Ilkeston Road, where a young girl and a male, presumably a young man, were stabbed multiple times. Their injuries proved fatal despite the efforts of paramedics to revive them.
Eyewitness accounts shed light on the van attack on Milton Street. Lynn Haggitt recounted seeing the driver accelerate upon spotting a police car before deliberately crashing into two individuals. One victim was thrown into the air while the other was pushed onto the curb.
Authorities are in the early stages of the investigation, striving to uncover the motive behind these attacks. The police have maintained an open mind and are collaborating with counter-terrorism units, as is customary in such cases. A single arrest has been made, and law enforcement officials do not believe that anyone else was involved.
As the investigation progresses, armed police raided a property on Ilkeston Road, where the initial two deaths occurred. Forensic teams are diligently examining the scene while a forensics tent has been erected on Magdala Road, where the third victim was found.
Nottingham now grapples with grief and unanswered questions. A dedicated helpline has been established to assist those seeking information about the well-being of their loved ones. The community remains on edge as they await further updates on this devastating event.
