A group of people inside a beauty salon in Kandy were hospitalised after they fell unconscious yesterday evening.
Due to a power outage on a section of the Kandy-Peradeniya road yesterday (July 20), many businesses were using generators. According to hospital sources, this emergency arose because a generator was turned on while all its doors and windows were closed and the air conditioners were running.
At around 1 p.m. today, a shopkeeper from a nearby shop went to the area where the beauty salon was located and saw a young woman lying unconscious in front of it. Later, when he and several others opened the door and went inside to inspect, they found six other young women and a man lying unconscious inside.
The group immediately called the police emergency unit and ambulance service. With the help of police officers who arrived at the scene, steps were taken to hospitalise the unconscious group.
According to the police, six of these people have been admitted to the Kandy National Hospital, and two others have been admitted to a private hospital in Kandy. The group includes six young women and one man. Four of the young women are employees of the beauty salon, while the others have come to receive services.
All the doors and windows of the establishment were sealed for air conditioning, and it is reported that the occupants became unconscious due to poisonous fumes generated by the operation of the generator in an enclosed space. Hospital sources stated that the condition of those hospitalised is returning to normal. They also reported that the people who initially entered the beauty salon to rescue these individuals experienced difficulty breathing as well.
