In light of Sri Lanka’s Speaker’s resignation, government sources have revealed that three names have been proposed for the position. The nominees include Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvi Salley and National People’s Power MPs Nihal Galappaththi and Lakshman Nipunarachchi. Nihal Galappaththi’s name had reportedly been suggested for the post on a previous occasion as well.

The government is expected to make a final decision on the new Speaker in the coming days.

Speaker Ashoka Ranwala has resigned after serving just two weeks in office. He officially submitted his resignation to Parliament today, following accusations of deceiving the public and his political party by falsifying his academic qualifications and presenting a fraudulent doctorate.

The controversy arose from Ranwala’s claims of holding a degree from Asada University in Japan, which were later proven false. Investigations confirmed that he only possessed a diploma from the University of Moratuwa, rather than the Bachelor of Science degree he had claimed.

Addressing the issue, President Ranil Wickremesinghe issued a special statement, emphasizing that any individual found guilty of wrongdoing, regardless of their rank or position, would be held accountable without hesitation.

Meanwhile, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya began gathering signatures for a motion of no confidence against Ranwala. Facing mounting public and political pressure, he announced his resignation, bringing his brief tenure as Speaker to an abrupt end.
