Speaker Ashoka Ranwala has stepped down from his position after serving for just two weeks. He officially submitted his resignation to Parliament today.
Ranwala faced accusations of deceiving both the public and his political party by falsifying his academic qualifications and presenting a fraudulent doctorate degree.
Controversy surrounded his claims of holding a degree from Asada University in Japan, which was later proven false. It was confirmed that Ranwala possessed only a diploma from the University of Moratuwa, not a Bachelor of Science degree as previously claimed.
Addressing the matter, the President issued a special statement emphasizing that anyone found guilty of wrongdoing, regardless of their rank or position, would be held accountable without hesitation.
Meanwhile, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya had begun gathering signatures for a motion of no confidence against Ranwala. In the face of mounting pressure, he announced his resignation today, bringing his brief tenure as Speaker to an abrupt end.
