Sri Lanka has recorded the births of three lambs through artificial insemination for the first time in its history. Three lambs have been bred in a very healthy manner at the Madampe Horakele farm of the National Livestock Development Board.
State Minister D.B Herath points out that this is a very good sign for the development of the sheep farming industry in the country. Artificial insemination of Red Madras sheep, an Indian breed has produced the recently born calves.
In 2019, 65 sheep underwent artificial insemination but had failed to produce any results. This year 48 sheep were selected for artificial insemination and 28 of them have already undergone artificial insemination. Eight of them are pregnant and three have given birth so far.
State Minister DB Herath, Chairman of the National Livestock Board Prof. Manjula P. Magamage, Horakele Farm Manager Devamithra and others were present at the inspection of the lambs.
