The President has ordered the Inspector General of Police to provide security to Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekera, who was a former director of the Criminal Investigation Department, immediately.

The President, who summoned Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne, has directed him to provide security to Shani Abeysekara.

Earlier, Abeysekara was denied security after the IGP ordered the relevant authorities to provide him with security based on a recommendation made by the National Authority for the Protection of Witnesses and Victims. Although the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Criminal Investigation Division has also recommended that Abeysekara’s life is under threat, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Western Province, Deshbandu Tennakoon, has recently refused to carry out orders.

Reports said that the President, who summoned the Inspector General of Police for his failure to provide protection to Shani Abeysekera due to the influence of Deshabandu Tennakoon, has ordered the IGP to provide protection to Shani Abeysekera immediately.

Meanwhile, police sources revealed that the conduct of the Inspector General of Police has come under serious scrutiny owing to his alleged acts of omission.
