The police headquarters has launched investigations in relation to a group of foreigners who pilfered millions of rupees by intercepting the computer systems of the ATM machines of the People’s Bank in the cities of Hikkaduwa, Galle, and Baddegama early yesterday (30).

Accordingly, they had withdrawn 4.68 million from one of these three ATM machines, two hundred seventy-five thousand (2,75,000) from another machine, and 5.7 million rupees (5700000) from yet another machine.

Galle Hikkaduwa and Baddegama police have received complaints in this regard, and the officers who are conducting the investigation have found that a group of foreigners entering the locations of the ATM machines yesterday morning pasted something like a sticker to the CCTV camera of the machine and tampered with the ATM machine system. Fraudsters appear to have hacked the software system in order to change data.

There are similarities in the way that they had removed money from the ATM machines, prompting the police to believe that one and the same group had been involved in removing money from all three ATM machines. Hikkaduwa, Galle, and Baddegama police stations are conducting further investigations to arrest the suspects connected to the theft.

Two days ago, it was revealed that two foreigners were trying to withdraw money from the ATM machine of a state bank in Narahenpita by breaking the machine.
