The Elections Commission has decided to hold local government elections by March 20.

Nimal Punchihewa, Chairman of the Election Commission, has expressed optimism that the local government election will be held before March 20th, next year, and that the relevant gazette notices calling for nominations will be issued before January 5th.

The chairman also said that the names of the members elected to the respective local government institutions will be announced before March 25, 2023.

Previously, the Election Commission stated that the date for calling the relevant nominations would most likely be announced by the end of December, but it was later stated that the date had to be postponed due to a variety of reasons.

The Chairman of the Election Commission mentioned that the process of receiving nominations is to be started within 14 days after the announcement of the gazette announcement.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Paffaral Organization, Mr Rohana Hettiarachchi, had stated that his organization will go before the court if the gazette announcement about the nominations is not published before the 5th of January.
