Thalatha Athokorala is set to be appointed as the new General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP), replacing Palitha Range Bandara, according to sources revealed to Lankasara. Bandara has reportedly expressed his willingness to join the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) in the coming days and support its leader and Presidential Candidate, Sajith Premadasa.
Political sources have indicated that Bandara will soon participate in campaign rallies alongside Premadasa to show his support for the SJB. Athukorala recently resigned from the SJB and her parliamentary seat, marking a significant development in the presidential campaigns. Some sources suggest that her resignation was due to internal disagreements within the SJB.
However, she has yet to obtain membership in the UNP. Meanwhile, UNP sources have revealed that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has signed the letter relieving Bandara of his duties as the party’s General Secretary. The decision to replace Bandara was reportedly due to his failure to meet the party’s expectations in that role, according to a report by Lankadeepa today.
However Range Bandara holding a press conference today told that he has not been removed from the position nor he was informed from anybody about such a move.
