Fears of escalating warfare have surged following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, prompting Tehran to call an emergency UN Security Council meeting. During the meeting, Israel’s deputy representative to the UN, Jonathan Miller, labeled Iran as the world’s greatest sponsor of terrorism. He accused Iran of using its proxies, including Hamas, the Houthis, and Hezbollah, to spread terrorism and violence.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is not merely a sponsor of terrorism; it is the very machine driving the engine of death and destruction that threatens us all,” Miller said, according to Al Jazeera. He urged the international community to hold Tehran accountable for its actions and affirmed Israel’s commitment to safeguarding its nation and its people.
In contrast, Palestine’s deputy UN representative, Feda Abdelhady Nasser, emphasized that the international community faces a choice between peace and conflict. She warned against allowing Israel to drag the region into further chaos.
Iranian Ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, countered that the assassination of Haniyeh indicates Israel’s intent to expand its conflict with Gaza to the broader region.
