The United Nations Security Council has taken a significant step by passing a resolution urging for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza. In an unexpected move, the United States abstained from vetoing the measure, which also includes provisions for the release of hostages.

This decision marks a notable shift in the US stance and indicates a departure from its previous alignment with Israel on such matters. However, the White House has emphasized that this action does not represent a change in policy.

In response to the resolution, Israel has opted to cancel its delegation’s planned visit to the White House scheduled for this week. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the US move as a “clear retreat” from its prior position.

Expressing disappointment over the cancelled visit, US officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining strong ties with Israel. Despite this setback, a separate visit by Israel’s defense minister is expected to proceed as planned.
