Assistant Manager in the accounts section of the Kandy Municipal Council, accused of defrauding the council of Rs. 18,71,000, has been arrested by the Special Criminal Investigation Division of the Kandy Police.
The suspect, Denuka Nishanthi Menike, was presented in court and has been remanded until the 15th of this month. The fraud involved the non-crediting of an amount due to the municipality in the transfer of lease rights for 18 shops.
Menike allegedly created fake receipts claiming rent from 31 shops and inserted them into the files. An audit revealed the extent of the fraud, with Rs. 1,35,00,000 defrauded in the transfer of leasehold and Rs. 82,78,800 in rent from 31 shops.
The investigation has been initiated based on instructions from the Central Provincial Local Government Commissioner, Chamila Athapattu.
