The suspect accused of raping a lady doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital in her official residence was arrested this morning (12) in the Galnewa area.
The suspect, identified yesterday (11) as an army deserter, was the subject of a special police operation involving five teams. The Minister of Public Security also informed Parliament about his identity.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had deserted the army after committing an act of indiscipline and had been disguising himself as a monk by wearing a robe.
The arrested individual has been identified as Kiribandage Nilanka Madhuranga Ratnayake, also known as Bunty, a resident of D 03, Elapara, Galnewa.
Following this incident, all healthcare staff, including doctors at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, have launched continuous trade union action, demanding better security for healthcare workers. The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has also initiated an island-wide strike today.
