Employees of a supermarket in Werahera area, apprehended a police officer caught stealing goods while in uniform, yesterday (14) at approximately 11 am and later handed him over to authorities.
The uniformed policeman, upon entering the supermarket, allegedly pilfered two packets of tea leaves valued at 2240 rupees. Vigilant security personnel, aided by CCTV surveillance, swiftly apprehended the officer in collaboration with supermarket staff, promptly notifying the Boralasgamuwa police of the incident.
Upon arrival at the scene, the Boralasgamuwa police encountered the detained officer, confirming his status as an officer from the Modara police station. It was revealed that the theft occurred while the officer was in Werahera to renew his driving license.
The suspect, identified as a police constable, was subsequently presented before the Nugegoda Magistrate as part of ongoing investigations conducted by the Boralasgamuwa Police.
The incident has sparked inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s actions, underscoring the importance of upholding the law and accountability among law enforcement personnel.
