The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, is set to resign from his position following reports of an impending impeachment motion by the National People’s Power government, according to *The Sunday Times*.
The newspaper reports that Justice Karunaratne is expected to submit his resignation by the end of this month. Although he is scheduled to retire on June 16 this year upon reaching the age of 63, the resignation is reportedly linked to the impeachment motion.
A deputy minister, who provided information to *The Sunday Times*, stated that the government intends to move forward with the impeachment, citing concerns over the recent performance of the Court of Appeal President.
This development is also believed to be influenced by recent decisions of the Attorney General’s Department to expedite the prosecution of 11 serious criminal cases. These decisions followed a discussion between Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake last Monday.
Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne began his judicial career as a magistrate and later rose to become the President of the Court of Appeal.
While former President Ranil Wickremesinghe recommended his appointment to the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Council rejected the nomination.
