Sri Lankans living in the United States rallied in about 50 cities across the United States to demand the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Protesters alleged that the Rajapaksa family has plunged Sri Lanka into an abyss and is responsible for bankrupting the country.

The Sri Lankan Students’ Union in the United States said in a statement that the protests were aimed at supporting active protests in Sri Lanka as well as raising awareness about the situation in Sri Lanka in the United States.  It will also address the issue of non-partisan political change in Sri Lanka, as well as support fundraising efforts by Sri Lankans abroad to supply essential medicines to Sri Lanka.

Simultaneously, a programme was launched to brief the State Secretaries, senators and members of Congress on the situation in Sri Lanka as well as the activities of the Rajapaksa family.
