On August 27, the Kandy High Court Judge, Darshika Wimalasiri, ordered Punjab Royals team manager, Pavlojadia Akash, to pay a fine of Rs 110 million. He was accused of attempting to fix matches by making offers to Sri Lankan cricketer Upul Tharanga and New Zealand player Neil Brutt during the Legends Trophy held at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

The Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Corruption in Sports arrested Akash following complaints from the cricketers Upul Tharanga and Neil Brutt during the Legend Cup cricket tournament. He was charged with two offenses under the Prevention of Corruption in Sports Act.

The Kandy High Court imposed a fine of Rs 55 million for each of the two charges. The judge further ruled that if the fine for one of the charges is not paid, Akash will face 2 1/2 years of hard labor. If both fines are not paid, he will be sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment.
