The Cabinet has approved the appointment of a committee to draft laws enabling Sri Lankans living abroad to exercise their voting rights.
Under the current Election Law, the right to vote is restricted to citizens residing in Sri Lanka whose names are included in the electoral roll.
However, many Asian countries, including India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines, have already introduced legal mechanisms to allow their expatriate citizens to vote. Recognizing this as a timely necessity, the Cabinet has decided to take similar steps for Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, a committee will be appointed comprising officials from the Election Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Employment and Tourism, the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, as well as other relevant ministries and institutions. The committee will study the related issues and make recommendations on amending existing laws or formulating new legislation to safeguard the voting rights of Sri Lankans overseas.
