In a new circular, Sri Lanka’s Motor Transport Commissioner General, Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe, has specified the conditions for issuing driving licenses to persons with disabilities.
The circular highlights that for applicants who have difficulty obtaining medical recommendations related to obtaining a license due to their disability, they should be referred to a technical committee.
The technical committee comprises an Assistant Motor Commissioner of the Motor Transport Department, a Senior Motor Vehicle Inspector, and a doctor nominated by the President of the National Institute of Transport Medicine.
The new committee will identify the disabilities of people with disabilities and make appropriate recommendations for obtaining a driver’s license.
It is set to meet every Friday of the month and applicants must submit their medical reports to the committee along with their application. If there are any setbacks in the process, applicants may appeal to the Commissioner General of Motor Transport.
According to the country’s motor vehicle department, an estimated 600,000 persons with disabilities are looking to obtain driver’s licenses.
