Minister Bandula Gunawardena announced during a press conference that train services will be designated as an essential service, effective from midnight today (12).
The minister stated that a proposal to this effect will be submitted to the President, urging him in writing to declare the Sri Lanka Railway an essential public service starting at midnight.
Minister Gunawardena emphasized that this action is taken on behalf of trade unions that have fulfilled their responsibilities diligently and not engaged in strikes, along with their 18,000 fellow employees.
Minister Gunawardena further elaborated that declaring train services as essential will help avert the difficulties that the public may face starting from tomorrow (13).
