The Minister of State for Defense, Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon, has announced significant steps towards gender inclusivity and advancement within the Sri Lanka Army. In a groundbreaking decision, the orders of the Women’s Corps of the Army are being updated to pave the way for the appointment of a female Major General in the future.

Minister Tennakoon emphasized the progressive and forward-thinking nature of this decision, highlighting its importance in promoting gender equality within the armed forces. As part of this initiative, efforts are underway to extend the retirement age of female soldiers in the Army from 45 to 55 years, enabling them to continue their service beyond the rank of Major.

“With the revision of service regulations and the extension of the retirement age, female soldiers who have previously reached the rank of Major will have the opportunity to advance further,” stated the Minister of State. “This reform will create the possibility of female Major Generals emerging from the Sri Lanka Army in the future.”

This historic move is not limited to the Army alone, as Minister Tennakoon confirmed plans to extend similar opportunities to the Air Force and the Navy. He also highlighted another significant milestone, noting that female soldiers have recently been deployed on vessels of the Navy for the first time in history.
