In a devastating incident in Nottingham City Centre last Wednesday (13), Oshada Jayasudera, a 31-year-old Sri Lankan undergraduate student at the University of Nottingham Trent, lost his life after being struck by a vehicle during a police chase.

The collision occurred as the police were pursuing a vehicle, resulting in the tragic death of Oshada Jayasudera despite immediate medical attention at the scene. A man has been arrested under suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen for analysis in connection with the accident.

Sergeant Mark Baker, leading the investigation at Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and friends, emphasizing the thoroughness of the ongoing investigation.

High Commissioner Rohitha Bogollagama has taken personal initiatives to engage with Jayasudera’s parents and expedite the repatriation of the body, prioritizing the family’s needs during this difficult time.

While the circumstances of Jayasudera’s presence outdoors at 3 a.m. remain unclear, it is known that he arrived in Nottingham earlier in the year for studies and had been living there for nearly three months.

In adherence to protocol, Nottinghamshire Police has referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), ensuring an impartial examination of the incident involving a police vehicle.
