Sri Lankan singer Umara Sinhawansa has been summoned to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs today (02) to provide a statement regarding the recent controversy surrounding her rendition of the national anthem. The Ministry has also requested a statement from the Cricket Board in relation to the matter.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena instructed Ministry Secretary Ranjith Asoka to conduct an investigation and submit a report after Umara faced accusations of singing the National Anthem in a distorted manner.
The Ministry’s Investigation Unit was informed to conduct a thorough inquiry on the matter and requested Umara Sinhawansa to appear at the Ministry today (02).
The investigation will be led by an additional secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, along with an Assistant Secretary from the Ministry of Education. Their focus will be to ascertain whether there has been any violation of the Constitution in the performance.
The Ministry of Education officer’s involvement will ensure a comprehensive understanding of the melody, singing style, and vocabulary used during the performance.
Upon completion of the investigation, the relevant report will be submitted to the Ministry Secretary, and further advice will be sought from the Attorney General on the matter.
