The Sharia University, situated in the Punani area of Batticaloa, was returned to MLAM Hezbollah, the former governor of the Eastern Province, today (20). This institution had been under government and army control for nearly four years.
Following the Easter attack by a group of Islamic extremists in the Eastern Province, Sharia University, which had been taken over by the government in 2019, had been intermittently used as a COVID-19 treatment center and medical facility.
The establishment of Sharia University, funded by a businessman in Arabia at a cost of over 800 crores in the Eastern Province of L.L.A., was reported to have been a donation to Hezbollah.
The transfer ceremony was attended by Major General M. K. U. P. A. Gunaratne, Eastern Defense Force Commander, along with other senior military officers and MLAM Hezbollah, the former Governor of the Eastern Province.
