Three senior ministers have met with the president individually to discuss the matter relating to the appointment of a new inspector general of police, providing recommendations about their choice to be appointed as the IGP.

The incumbent police chief is expected to retire on the 20th.

According to informed sources, the impending retirement had ignited a virtual contest between three senior ministers to appoint a person whom each of them preferred to be appointed as the new IGP.

The three senior persons include Senior Deputy Inspectors General Deshabandu Tennekoon, Lalith Pathinayake, and Ajith Rohana.

Deshabandu Tennekoon had several court cases in the magistrate’s court, but he recently obtained a stay order from the Court of Appeal suspending those cases until the final determination of the appeal filed by him. The other two are also allegedly facing various issues in connection with the Eater Sunday Attack and other internal problems connected to them.
