Embracing Nature's Splendor: SEGNO'23 Hike Expedition Ignites a Thrilling Adventure.

The long-awaited revival of the renowned SEGNO’23 – All-Island Hike Expedition organized by the 11th Kandy Rangers of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, happened on the 10th of June at the Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve.

After a four-year hiatus, which had tested the resilience of the organizing committee, this 14th edition emerged as a triumphant testament to the unyielding spirit of adventure.

The return of SEGNO’23 was not just a mere event; it was a symbol of resilience, determination, and a rally to rediscover the joy of exploration.

Over 450 competitors from 35 schools comprised of Scouts and Girl Guides gathered at the trailhead to embark on this journey of a lifetime.

In the captivating embrace of the Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve’s picturesque backdrop, the exploration unfolded. Teams ventured forth, testing their limits, navigating diverse terrains and waterways, striving for every point at the checkpoints, all while reveling in the exhilarating activities scattered along the trail.

The participants’ enthusiasm was infectious, creating an atmosphere of shared passion and unwavering determination.

As the sun began to set, signaling the completion of the exploration, the crowd made their way to the grand closing ceremony held at the auditorium of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy.

The event was graced by esteemed guests: Chief Guest, Squadron Leader of Sri Lanka Air Force, Viludani Yatawara, an alumnus of the college, and Guest of Honor, Mrs. Sureka Gunathilaka, Commissioner of Rangers of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association. Their presence added a touch of prestige and inspiration to the occasion.

Joining the distinguished guests were the honorable principal of Mahamaya Girls’ College, S. Mrs. Senadheera and the Commissioners of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association.

As the curtains drew to a close, certificates and trophies were presented to acknowledge the exceptional achievements of the participants.

Two individuals stood out for their remarkable research skills during the tournament. M.S. Senaratne from Pushpadana Girls’ College, Kandy, was celebrated as the Best Hiker (Girls Awards) while Nidula Sathsara from Rahula College, Matara was awarded the title of Best Hiker (Boys Awards). Their dedication and intellectual curiosity set them apart from their peers, inspiring others to delve deeper into the world of girl guiding and scouting.

Amidst fierce competition, Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala secured the second runner-up(Girls Awards), while Pushpadana Girls’ College, Kandy clinched the title of first runner-up(Girls Awards).

It was Ferguson Highschool, Ratnapura that emerged triumphant, claiming the overall Girls Championship with their outstanding performance and unwavering determination.

In the Boys Championship, Dharmaraja College, Kandy showcased their mettle and secured the second runner-up position, closely followed by Bandaranayake College, Gampaha as the first runner-up.

It was Thurstan College, Colombo, that reigned supreme, emerging as the undisputed overall Boys Champions.

As the organizers of SEGNO’23 headed by its Co-Presidents, Oshadhi Rathnayake and Sachinthani Ketakumbura, the 11th Kandy Rangers of Mahamaya Girls’ College extended their gratitude to the college principal, distinguished guests, guide captains, scout leaders, teachers in charge, all the participants, and parents at the end of this ceremonious event. Their unwavering support and dedication played an instrumental role in making SEGNO’23 a memorable and enriching experience for everyone involved.

SEGNO’23 – All-Island Hike Expedition reached its climactic conclusion, leaving behind unforgettable memories and stories of resilience. As the participants disperse, their spirits uplifted and hearts united, they embody the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” The trails they conquered have not only nurtured a love for the great outdoors but also instilled in them the invaluable virtues of preparedness, adaptability, and unwavering determination. Armed with these qualities, they are ready to conquer any path that lies ahead, embracing the beauty and challenges of life’s journey.
