Electricity tariffs are to be reduced from July 1st

The Public Utilities Commission says that the Ceylon Electricity Board will introduce an overall 3 percent reduction in electricity tariffs effective July 1st.

However, the tariff revision announced, subject to the approval of the Public Utilities Commission, says that the tariffs of low-income groups using less than 30 units will be reduced by 26.9 per cent.

In addition, the electricity tariff in the category that falls between 31 and 60 units has been reduced by 10.8 percent, the tariff in the category falling between 61 and 90 units by 7.2 percent, the tariff of those using 91 to 180 units by 3.4 percent, and the tariff of the category above 180 units by 1.3 percent.

Also, the electricity tariff for religious places and charitable institutions will be reduced by about 3.2 percent. The hotel industry will get one of the biggest concessions, with a reduction of 12.6 percent.
It is stated that there will be no change in the tariffs levied on industries, public categories, street lights, and government institutions.
