Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today (22) raised concerns in Parliament over whether the fatal shooting of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekera during a Public Day event constituted a matter of national security.
Premadasa noted that Wickramasekera was shot while performing his official duties at the Pradeshiya Sabha premises and later succumbed to his injuries. He stressed that such an incident points to a serious deterioration in law and order, warning that the inability to protect elected public representatives highlights broader risks to the country’s internal security.
The Opposition Leader urged the Government to take swift and decisive measures to restore public confidence and ensure the safety of those engaged in civic duties.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Police said a pistol-type firearm is suspected to have been used in the shooting that targeted the Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha earlier today.
According to Police, the gunman entered the local council premises and opened fire at the Chairman while he was inside the council chamber.
Police further stated that the suspects fled the area immediately after the shooting incident, which occurred this morning.
