Sajith Premadasa Reveals Plans to Meet IMF to Combat Malnutrition in SL

Opposition Leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa has voiced concerns over the high levels of child, infant, and maternal malnutrition prevalent in the country. Citing statistics from a 2022 census indicating that 25% of children aged 5-18 are underweight, Premadasa stressed the urgent need for action to address this critical issue.

In an effort to tackle the malnutrition crisis affecting mothers, babies, children, and school children, Sajith Premadasa announced plans to meet with representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the coming week. He emphasized the importance of securing IMF support to implement a comprehensive program aimed at eliminating maternal and child malnutrition.

Sajith Premadasa proposed the establishment of a special fund, with contributions from financial institutions such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, to finance this program. Additionally, he suggested the implementation of a nationwide school lunch program to ensure the health and well-being of all students in government schools.

Speaking at the 120th phase of the Sakwala congenial classrooms giving program at Gampaha Dompe Malwana Maha Vidyalaya, Premadasa underscored the significance of investing in education to prevent school closures and reduce crime rates. He emphasized the need to create an enlightened society for future generations.

Furthermore, Sajith Premadasa highlighted the importance of addressing systemic issues and ensuring a brighter future for the next generation. He reiterated the commitment of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to improving the lives of disadvantaged children through initiatives such as the Sakwala program.

In conclusion, Opposition leader, Sajith Premadasa urged the government to acknowledge the severity of the malnutrition crisis and take decisive action to address it. He emphasized the need for a concerted effort to tackle this pressing issue and ensure the well-being of mothers and children across the country.

The opposition leader also highlighted the efforts of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya in providing essential medical supplies and equipment to hospitals, as well as improving school infrastructure through initiatives such as the Sakwala bus program and the implementation of comfortable classroom equipment in schools.
