Adults, children, pregnant mothers and people suffering from non-communicable diseases who are going on pilgrimage on behalf of Poson to the dry region areas like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa should be careful in view of the prevailing hot weather, says physiologist specialist Dr. Varuna Gunathilake.

The rocky terrains frequented by devotees are susceptible to intense heat, as the stones absorb and emit radiant warmth during the afternoon. Experts issue a request, urging pilgrims to refrain from ascending or descending such areas during these hours to avoid potential hazards.

Dr. Gunathilake emphasizes the importance of drinking more water, especially for older individuals who may not feel as thirsty due to age-related factors. It’s crucial to encourage them to stay hydrated.

Furthermore, the specialist advises against relying on chilled sweet beverages to quench thirst:
“Excessive sweetness, as found in honey, can lead to dehydration due to excessive urination. Hence, it is advisable to opt for pure water, orange or lime juice, and hydrating fruits like watermelon to alleviate thirst,”

Dr. Gunathilake underscores the importance of increased water intake, especially for the elderly, who tend to drink less due to diminished sensitivity to thirst, exacerbated by age-related factors. It is crucial to encourage them to consume ample amounts of water.

Additionally, the large crowds visiting temples during Poson often result in long queues, exposing devotees to prolonged sun exposure and potential risks.

He also urges organizers and participants of Dansalas to prioritize providing shelter and access to drinking water for those in need.

As Poson draws near, it is vital to heed these expert warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable pilgrimage experience for all.
