A school student and a foreign national drowned while swimming in the vicinity of the Koggala estuary, near the town.
The victims have been identified as 14-year-old Ravichalvam Shiva Akash, a school student, and a 43-year-old Russian national residing in Warakapola, Mathipura, Millagahamulla.
The young school student, Ravichalvam Shiva Akash, had come for a picnic with his parents and relatives. While swimming in the sea screen near the mouth of the Koggala estuary, he was caught by strong waves and swept away. His lifeless body was discovered washed up on the beach near the Ahangama Kataluwa bridge.
The Russian national also met a similar fate while swimming in the sea screen near Habaraduwa city. He was overwhelmed by a wave, prompting local residents to come to his rescue. Despite their efforts, the victim was already lifeless. He was subsequently rushed to Karapitiya Hospital’s outpatient department in 1990 by the emergency ambulance service.
The post-mortem examinations of the deceased school student and the foreign national were scheduled to be conducted at Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
